Teenage fans of the Twilight series will no doubt be attracted to The Runaways by its stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning.

But parents, beware - unlike the vampire tales, this is no innocent story of teen love and romance.

Stewart and Fanning have likely chosen The Runaways to show a grittier side of their talent. These two child stars are all grown up, and do a great job of portraying the brightest stars in this all-girl rock band.
Stewart plays Joan Jett, most famous for her hit song I Love Rock And Roll.

But before that she was the driving force in a band called The Runaways, formed in 1975.

This is the story of how that band came together and made a stellar rise to fame, before self-imploding.

The film does not gloss over the facts - there was sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, and it's not pretty.

Fanning's character, Cherie Currie, is recruited as the band's eye-candy lead singer. But too much, too soon ends in disaster as she's sucked into a world of drug-snorting debauchery. To Fanning's credit, there's not a hint of the girl we knew in movies like Charlotte's Web and War of the Worlds.

Stewart is convincing as Jett - and she had the approval of the singer herself, an executive producer on the film.

The girl known around the world as Bella Swan has got acting chops, and does a good job of portraying the determination of a woman who led the charge for women rockers.

The Runaways is a great coming-of-age tale, and those who love late 70s pink will get a kick out of the music.

Despite the drug use, some might say the film acts as a cautionary tale against their use.

Directed by Floria Sigismondi, the film is skilfully shot. Just don't expect too many warm fuzzies or uplifting moments.
